Dr. Sand has a decades-long commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of women through urogynecological treatment, educating physicians in this speciality, and expanding access to treatment around the globe.
He is the Director of Urogynecology Research, Division of Urogynecology in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, NorthShore University HealthSystem. Dr. Sand is also a Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine.
Here at NorthShore University HealthSystem, Dr. Sand founded the Urogynecology and Fellowship program. This built on his work as the founder of the first Division of Urogynecology and Fellowship program in the State of Illinois at Rush Medical College, the third of its kind in the country, and the second Division of Urogynecology and Fellowship program in Urogynecology in the state at NorthShore and Northwestern University Medical School. After his promotion to Associate Professor, he then became the youngest tenured Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology in Northwestern’s history.
Additionally, Dr. Sand has published over 250 articles in peer-reviewed journals and over 50 patient brochures, non- peer-reviewed publications and instructional videos to educate his peers. Dr. Sand has published 2 textbooks and served as a section editor for two other textbooks in Urogynecology. He has written over 25 textbook chapters. Dr. Sand has served as an Associate Editor for the International Urogynecology Journal for 31 years. He is a special reviewer for over 20 journals throughout the world.
Dr. Sand has served as the Secretary-Treasurer, Vice-President and President of International Urogynecological Association (IUGA), the largest organization of urogynecologists in the world.
He is a founder and past-President of the Foundation for International Urogynecological Assistance (FIUGA), which funds the work he initiated in Ghana to educate Fellows in Urogynecology in Accra and Kumasi and to support the educational and research activities of the IUGA. In addition to Ghana, the FIUGA currently educates Fellows in underserved areas of Nepal. Dr. Sand continues his commitment to international medical cooperation as an invited lecturer and visiting surgeon in six continents and over 30 countries across the globe.
Dr. Sand has been training gynecologists and urologists around the world for over 35 years. He has lectured and trained surgeons in pelvic floor reconstructive surgery on 6 continents and in over 40 countries. Dr. Sand has hosted annual post-graduate programs in Female Pelvic Surgery in Chicago and the Caribbean for over 30 years; educating thousands of urologists and gynecologists in how to better treat their patients with urinary incontinence, pelvic prolapse, and pelvic floor dysfunction. Dr. Sand has been honored for his mentoring by both the International Urogynecological Association and the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons.
Dr. Sand is a much sought-after consultant throughout the world advising pharmaceutical companies, medical equipment companies, start-ups, think tanks, industry analysts and patient advocacy groups. This consulting work along with his innovative research has led to our patients being able to have access to the latest innovations in the treatment of overactive bladder syndrome, urinary incontinence, bladder pain syndrome and prolapse.
He received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Northwestern University in their 6-year Honors Program in Medical Education. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Prentice Women’s Hospital, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, and a fellowship in Gynecologic Urology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at Memorial Medical Center of Long Beach, University of California, Irvine, the only fellowship in urogynecology in the United States at the time.
